CanalTD

CanalTD is an individual university Game Programming coursework project by Jingyu Pan.

A turn-based tower defense and card strategy game. Build towers, play cards, survive enemy waves, and aim for the highest score. Killing enemies and assisting with kills increases score, while castle damage reduces score.

Modes

  • Local Mode: same-device turn-based play.
  • AI Mode: practice or play against AI-controlled opponents.
  • Online Mode: room-code multiplayer for 2-4 players.

Online multiplayer: uses Photon Cloud for limited coursework, testing, portfolio review, and small-scale play, up to 20 concurrent users. There is no matchmaking; players create or join a private room using a room code.

Platform

  • Windows build only.
  • Developed in Unity 2022.3.62f3 on macOS.

Controls

  • Mouse: click UI, select cards, tiles, towers, gates, and targets.
  • Keyboard: Esc or close buttons return from panels where available.

Known Limitations

  • Online mode is small-scale room-code multiplayer only.
  • No matchmaking, reconnect, or spectator mode.
  • Online play requires internet access and Photon Cloud availability.
  • This page currently provides a Windows build only.

Open Source

The source repository is available on GitHub. Pull requests and constructive feedback are welcome:

Credits

  • Tiny Swords asset pack by Pixel Frog for most 2D game art.
  • AI-generated artwork for the card images.
  • Medieval Sharp font from DaFont.
  • Audio effects and music from Pixabay.
  • Photon Cloud / PUN for room-code online multiplayer.

AI assistance was used for documentation support, code review, debugging guidance, and implementation assistance. Final design, Unity integration, testing, and submission decisions are my own work.

Photon logo is displayed in the splash screen as requested by Photon Support for use of the free 20 CCU Photon Cloud plan.

Full asset, audio, font, AI, and third-party reference details are documented in the project repository:
